Urban Waste-Water Projects in the Municipality of Strumica
Strumica is the largest city in eastern part of the country, near the Novo Selo-Petrich border crossing with Bulgaria. According to the data from the 2002 census, 54,676 people live in the municipality of which 35,311 are inhabitants in the City of Strumica. It is named after the Strumica River, which runs through it. Strumica is the main agricultural centre in the country. It has food industry, textile factories and a developed domestic and international trade network. The main pollution source of the surface and underground water is the untreated wastewater from the urban area and industry.
The Municipality of Strumica has well developed and functioning sewerage network, but does not have a waste water treatment plant (WWTP).
The main counterparts to the EU projects are the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning, the Municipality of Strumica together with the Public Communal Enterprise (Javno Pretprijatie za Komunalni Dejnosti).
Under IPA I: in April 2016, the construction of waste-water treatment plant (WWTP) for 53.419 people equivalent (PE) and the construction of 375 meter section of collector have started. This contract is signed with WTE Wassertechnik GmbH and its value is approx. 6.9 Million EURO (IPA plus National Contribution). The supervision contract is signed with Rutex Ltd. The works proceed at good pace and the quality standards are reported to be high.
IPA I contributions to the contracts in total amount to approx. 5.7 Million EURO, in details:
- 5,192,832 EURO to the construction of the WWTP;
- 300, 000 EURO (approximate figure as part of a bigger study) to the Study and Tender Preparation;
- 255,000 EURO to the Supervisor to the construction of the WWTP.
The WWTP, when completed, should achieve the target effluent quality standards in accordance with the requirements of the EU Urban Waste-Water Treatment Directive and with the respective national legislation. The current construction of the WWTP (Stage 1) with primary, secondary treatment and sludge treatment facilities takes into account the possibility to incorporate a tertiary treatment in the future (Stage 2).
