Wednesday 9 January: The Commission presents the European Cybercrime Centre (EC3)

On 9 January the European Cybercrime Centre (EC3) will be presented to media by the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Cecilia Malmström and the Head of the Centre, Troels Oerting, ahead of the official inauguration that will take place at the Europol premises in The Hague on January 11.

Commission outlines next steps for EU enlargement

Teachers' salaries reduced or frozen in growing number of European countries

Sixteen European countries have reduced or frozen teachers' salaries in response to the economic downturn. On 24 September the Council adopted the conclusions of the Working Party on e-Law, presided by the Luxembourg government, on the optional introduction of the so-called European Legislation Identifier (ELI). Sanctioning employers of irregular migrants: Commission urges Lithuania and Poland to act

Some Member States are still failing to apply EU rules on sanctions and measures against employers who exploit irregular migrants. Today, the Commission decided to advance infringement proceedings and issue reasoned opinions requesting Lithuania and Poland bring their laws into line with the Employer Sanctions Directive (Directive 2009/52/EC), which should have been implemented by 20 July 2011.

Euro area inflation estimated at 2.7%

Euro area annual inflation is expected to be 2.7% in February 2012 according to a flash estimate issued by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. It was 2.6% in January 2012.

2011 EU budget "99.7% implemented!"

99.7% (in commitments) of the EU budget were implemented in 2011 and 99.2% of the voted payments were executed. Out of a total budget of €123.2bn in payments, only €375 million have not been implemented (compared to €1.6bn not implemented in 2010).

New EU rules for ‘Organic Wine’ agreed

New EU rules for “organic wine” have been agreed in the Standing Committee on Organic Farming (SCOF), and will be published in the Official Journal in the coming weeks. With the new regulation, which will apply from the 2012 harvest, organic wine growers will be allowed to use the term “organic wine” on their labels.
