Urban Waste-Water Projects in the Municipality of Radovish

Radovish is a city in the south-eastern part of the Beneficiary country. The municipality covers an area of 608 km2 at 380 metres above sea level, with a population of approx. 28,000 citizens. The Municipality of Radovish has well developed and functioning sewerage network, but does not have a waste water treatment plant (WWTP). Wastewater is discharged directly into the recipient, which is the Radovishka River. Today, the Radovishka River is under great environmental pressure due to the pollutant load, in terms of organic pollution and nutrients.

The main counterparts to the EU projects are the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning, the Municipality of Radovish together with the Public Communal Enterprise Plavaja- Radovish. The cooperation between stakeholders is essential when it comes to providing relevant documentation and/or organizing meetings and site visits necessary for a smooth implementation of the projects.

Under IPA I: in April 2016, the construction of waste-water treatment plant (WWTP) for 25,000 people equivalent (PE) and the construction of section of collectors and rehabilitation of sewage network have started. This contract is signed with WTE Wassertechnik GmbH and its value is approx. 6 Million EURO. The supervision contract is signed with Rutex Ltd. The works proceed at good pace and the quality standards are reported to be high.

The overall expenditure IPAI & National Contribution: WWTP Construction, Supervision and Study and Tender Preparation amount to approx. 6.5 Million EURO.

IPA I contributions to the contracts in total amount to approx. 5 Million EURO, in details:

  • 4,487,887 EURO to the construction of the WWTP;
  • 211, 599 EURO to the Study and Tender Preparation;
  • 255,000 EURO to the Supervisor to the construction of the WWTP.

The WWTP, when completed, should achieve the target effluent quality standards in accordance with the requirements of the EU Urban Waste-Water Treatment Directive and with the respective national legislation. The treatment capacity of the WWTP shall be designed for the projected flows for a 30 year design horizon.

The current construction of the WWTP (Stage 1) with primary and secondary treatment and sludge treatment facilities takes into account the possibility to incorporate a tertiary treatment in the future (Stage 2).
